Larus fuscus fuscus 2CY, June 14 2014, Tampere, Finland (61.33N 24.59E). Picture: Hannu Koskinen.

Typical 2CY fuscus fuscus bird in June. Returned from the wintering grounds with all flight feathers (primaries, secondaries and rectrices) replaced for 2nd gen feathers. This process often takes place in late winter, and last replaced primaries may still show a glossy black cast (indicating fresh feathers). A variable number of wing-coverts may be replaced again; often several median coverts and inner greater coverts, now 3rd gen and often blackish without markings.

P10 juvenile in left wing.
